editEtymology
editProbably borrowed from Catalan caixa or Occitan caissa, from Latin capsa. (Latin /-ps-/ yields palatal outcomes in the latter two, but not in Spanish; cf. Latin ipse > Sp. ese, Catalan eixe.) Related to English case and cash and, more distantly, Spanish quijada.
