editFrom Old Galician-Portuguese cullar, collar, from Latin cochleārem (“spoon”). The Old Portuguese word was influenced by Old French cuiller (French cuiller / cuillère), from the same Latin root. Cognate with Galician culler, French cuillère, Spanish cuchara, Catalan cullera. Compare with caracol (“snail”).
