editFrom Middle Dutch dālen, from Old Dutch *dalon. Equivalent to dal (“valley”) + -en. Derived in Old Dutch times, and apparently only shared with Low Saxon. The regular Germanic word is vallen, which has now acquired a more specific sense of “stumble” or “drop uncontrolledly”.
