emoji ZWJ sequence (plural emoji ZWJ sequences)

  1. (computing) A combination of emoji and control characters to display a particular emoji on supported operating systems.[1][2]
    • 2016 November 14, Rob Reed, “Everything You Need To Know About Emoji”, in Smashing Magazine[3]:
When an emoji zwj[sic] sequence is sent to a system that does not have a corresponding single glyph, the ZWJ characters would be ignored and a fallback sequence of separate emoji would be displayed.

Usage notes

edit

For instance, the transgender pride flag emoji (🏳️‍⚧️) is formed by combining 🏳 (U+1F3F3; White Flag) + (U+200D; Zero Width Joiner) + (U+26A7; Male With Stroke And Male And Female Sign). On systems that do not support the transgender flag emoji, this sequence will display as 🏳⚧.
