Inherited from Vulgar Latin or Late Latin ingannāre (attested in a gloss), from Latin ganniō. Compare Portuguese enganar, Catalan enganyar, Romanian îngâna, Italian ingannare. Cf. also Medieval Latin (in)gannatura (mockery).
