Etymology
editFrom Middle High German ernen, arnen, from Old High German arnōn, from Proto-Germanic *azanōną. This verb is denominal from the noun *azaniz (“harvest”), which underwent umlaut in inflected forms and was later merged with a related noun to yield modern German Ernte. The verb was continuously adapted to its underlying noun.
