Etymology

From Proto-Ugric *palɣɜ (village). Cognates include Northern Mansi па̄вэл (pāvèl) and Eastern Khanty пуӽәԓ (puḥəł).[1] Relationship to the Finnish verbs palvella (to serve), palvoa (to worship) has also been proposed.
