From Proto-West Germanic *feþru, from Proto-Germanic *feþrō, whence also Old Saxon fethara, Old Dutch fethera, fethara, Old English feþer, Old Norse fjöðr. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *péth₂r̥ ~ pth₂én- (feather, wing), from *peth₂- (to fly).
