Etymology

From Middle High German phinztac, a partial calque of Ancient Greek πέμπτη ἡμέρα (pémptē hēméra, “fifth day”): phinz- (from πέμπτη (pémptē)) + tac (“day”). Cognate with German Pfinztag.
