German
editEtymology

Pronunciation
editVerb

- (transitive) to plait; to braid; to weave
- 1878, Friedrich Nietzsche, Menschliches, Allzumenschliches […] [Human, All Too Human][1], section 147:
- Die Kunst versieht nebenbei die Aufgabe zu conserviren, auch wohl erloschene, verblichene Vorstellungen ein Wenig wieder aufzufärben; sie flicht, wenn sie diese Aufgabe löst, ein Band um verschiedene Zeitalter und macht deren Geister wiederkehren.
- (please add an English translation of this quotation)
Usage notes
edit- For the 2nd and 3rd person singular there are two sets of forms: regularized (du flechtest, er flechtet) and traditional (du flichtst, er flicht). Only the traditional forms are standard, and they remain favoured in literary German, but are rare in the vernacular and might even be unintelligible to many less educated speakers.
