Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese fouce (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin falcem, from Proto-Indo-European *dhalk-, *dhalg- (“a cutting tool”). Cognate with Portuguese foice, Asturian foz, Spanish hoz, Catalan falç.
