Etymology

From dialectal gabë +‎ -onjë (feminine), related to shkabë, with the same stem but different prefix. The source is Proto-Albanian *gabā, from Proto-Indo-European *kobuǵos (compare English hawk, Latin capys (bird of prey), Russian ко́бчик (kóbčik, red-footed falcon)).[1]
