Usage notes

edit
  • The phrases gewohnt sein (to be used to) and gewöhnt sein (to be accustomed to) have very similar meanings and can often be used more or less interchangeably. However, they have different constructions. The former is construed with direct accusative or zu + infinitive, the latter with an + accusative:
    • Dieses heiße Wetter bin ich nicht gewohnt.I’m not used to this hot weather.
    • An dieses heiße Wetter bin ich nicht gewöhnt.I’m not accustomed to this hot weather.
    • Ich bin gewohnt, früh aufzustehen.I’m used to getting up early.
    • Ich bin daran gewöhnt, früh aufzustehen.I’m accustomed to getting up early.
  • A totally different matter is the use of gewohnt and gewöhnt with the perfect auxiliary haben. In this case, gewohnt is the participle of wohnen (to live, dwell):
    • Viele Jahre hatte ich in Berlin gewohnt. For many years I had lived in Berlin.
    • Nur langsam hatte ich mich an das Leben dort gewöhnt.Only slowly had I got accustomed to life there.[1]
