Remade analogically as a singular from the original form grăunț (later interpreted as a plural), itself from an alteration of an earlier *grănuț with a nasal infix, from Vulgar Latin root *granuceum or *granutium, ultimately from Latin grānum. Compare Aromanian gãrnuts.
