Etymology

edit

In view of its meaning and the variant greth "flax-combings", likely from a diminutive *grabth of Proto-Albanian *graba, an o-grade noun related to kreh.[1] Alternatively, with voicing of initial, from krath (leaf bud, sprout on a tree), variant of kranth ~ krëndth, diminutive of krand ~ krënd (brushwood; tinder).[2] Finally, Çabej derives it from *granth, diminutive in -th from South Slavic (cf. Serbo-Croatian grana (branch; brushwood), Macedonian гранка (granka), dialectal Bulgarian гран (gran)).[3]
