Etymology

edit

From Proto-Finnic *hapci, possibly from Proto-Uralic *ëpte, though the appearances of the initial h, as well as the unalternating internal cluster *pc > ps, are unclear (regular development from PU *ëpte would presumably produce Proto-Finnic **apci : **ahten (gen.) and from that, Finnish **apsi : **ahden). On the contrary, see Proto-Finnic *küpci for a similar case of unalternating internal clusters.

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /ˈhɑpsi/, [ˈhɑ̝ps̠i]
  • Rhymes: -ɑpsi
  • Hyphenation(key): hap‧si

Noun

edit

hapsi (literary)

  1. A single hair, especially a grey hair of an ageing person.
