From Proto-Finnic *harva, possibly Finno-Ugric origin. Cognate to Ingrian harva, Finnish harva, Finnish *harvas. Compare Southern Khanty турәп (turəp, sparse) and Erzya чуро (čuro, rare, sparse). The further Finno-Ugric cognates are phonologically irregular.
