editFrom Middle High German heiser (“rough, hoarse”), Old High German heisi (“hoarse”), from Proto-Germanic *haisaz. Cognate with Middle Dutch heersch, Old English hās, Dutch hees (“hoarse”), English hoarse, Old Norse háss.[1]
