editFrom Proto-Finnic *hirci, from earlier *širti, borrowed from Slavic; compare Proto-Slavic *žьrdь (whence Russian жердь (žerdʹ)).[1] Cognate with Ingrian hersi, Karelian hirsi, Estonian hirs, Votic irsi.
