From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ibəʀ (saliva in the mouth; drool; desire; crave; lust for). Cognates with Pangasinan ibeg (covet, desire, fall in love with), Kapampangan ibug (corporal desires; appetite), Cebuano ibog (attracted, craving for), Tboli iwol (saliva, drool over, desire), Tausug ibug (envy), Malagasy ivy (saliva), and Tongan ifo (saliva, tasty).
