editFrom Proto-Finnic *kärsä, possibly an Indo-Iranian loan. [1] Alternatively, possibly from Sami, compare Northern Sami gearsi (“pig's snout”) (from Proto-Samic *kearsē, cognate with kehrä). Related to kirsu.
