editEtymology
editThe origin is uncertain. Borrowed from Romani kanka (“friend”) according to Nişanyan.[1] Possibly a clipping of colloquial Turkish kankardeş (“blood-brother”). An alternative origin is also suggested, based on the regional Turkish kaka (“brother, elder brother”).[2]
