editFirst attested in 1789. Borrowed from Austrian German Karnische (“curtain-rod”), from French corniche (“cornice”), from Italian cornice (“frame, cornice”), from Latin corōnis (“curved line, flourish in writing”), from Ancient Greek κορωνίς (korōnís, “curved object”).
