editSino-Vietnamese word from 金 (“gold; metal”) and 類 (“kind”), probably a further sinicization of the now obsolete compound loài kim (“metals”).
The Sino-Vietnamese equivalent of Chinese 金屬 / 金属 (jīnshǔ), Japanese 金属 (kinzoku), Korean 금속 (geumsok), *kim thuộc, is not used.
