Etymology

Either:

  1. from Proto-Indo-European *kā́p-s ~ *káp-s-os, from *kap- (to seize, hold), suffixed with -shtë and ultimately a doublet of kap,
  2. or from Proto-Albanian *kāp-esta,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂po- (land, garden), cognate to Proto-Germanic *hōbō.[2][3]

In both cases it is also cognate to Ancient Greek κῆπος (kêpos).
