Alteration of lakthi (Arbanasi), collective of lakth (loop, mesh) +‎ -i (collective suffix), because of the tree's flexible branches,[1][2] compare Latvian lazda (hazel), lagzda (hazel), Lithuanian lazdà (stick, staff), Old Prussian laxde (hazel).
