From Proto-Hmong *ʔlinᴬ (monkey), probably from Proto-Hmong-Mien *ʔbliŋ (id). Related to Proto-Mien *ʔbiŋᴬ (id); outside of Hmong-Mien, compare Proto-Tai *liːŋᴬ (id), whence Thai ลิง (ling, id).[1]
