Etymology

edit

From the same stem as melns (q.v.): Proto-Baltic *mel-n, from Proto-Indo-European *mel- (dark, red color; dirty). Interestingly, the same stem gave rise to blue- and black-color terms in Baltic languages. Cognates include Lithuanian dialectal mė́las (blue), Sudovian mełno (black).[1]
