From Old Galician-Portuguese almafi, from Arabic عَظْم اَلْفِيل (ʕaẓm al-fīl, elephant-bone), from عَظْم (ʕaẓm, bone) + فِيل (fīl, elephant). Compare Galician, Spanish, and Catalan marfil.
