Etymology 1

edit

From Proto-Philippine *máya (rice bird, small bird found in rice fields). Alternatively, from Sanskrit माया (māyā, illusion), according to Pardo de Tavera (1887).

Pronunciation

Noun

edit

maya (Baybayin spelling ᜋᜌ)

  1. chestnut munia (Lonchura atricapilla)
  2. sparrow
  3. Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus)

Etymology 2

edit

The original term has become obsolete. However recent usage is due to clipping of mamaya.

Pardo de Tavera (1887) posits it to come from Sanskrit समय (samaya, appointed or proper time, right moment for doing anything, opportunity, occasion, time, season) with the first syllable mistaken as the sa- prefix, hence later elided. Compare Javanese ꦱꦼꦩꦪ (semaya, to postpone; to delay), Old Javanese samaya, Indonesian semaya. See also samaya.
