editFrom Proto-West Germanic *mariswīn. Equivalent to meri (“sea”) + *swīn (“pig”). Cognate with Old High German meriswīn (“dolphin”). Compare also Dutch zeevarken (“porpoise”), from zee (“sea”) + varken (“pig”).
