Etymology

edit

Most likely borrowed from German Neger.

Noun

edit

neeger (genitive neegri, partitive neegrit)

  1. negro, person of African descent

Usage notes

edit

Can be both neutral and pejorative, although the neutral meaning is becoming increasingly restricted to rural and less-educated speakers, due to influence from English. In formal polite speech (and in writing) the term mustanahaline is generally preferred.
