editAttested since the 13th century (orfoo). From Late Latin orphanus (“orphan”), from Ancient Greek ὀρφανός (orphanós). Cognate with Portuguese órfão, Spanish huérfano. For the phonetic development of the ending, compare orgo (from Latin organum) and ravo (from Latin raphanus).
