Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese paaço (palace), from Latin palātium (palace), from Palātium (Palatine hill), possibly from Etruscan 𐌚𐌀𐌋𐌀𐌃 (falad, sky). Cognate with Galician and Spanish pazo. Doublet of palácio, a borrowing.
