From Proto-Finnic *paksu, borrowed from Indo-Iranian; compare Sanskrit बहु (bahu, much, many, abundant), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰn̥ǵʰús (thick). Akin to Estonian paks. Probably also related to Erzya покш (pokš, big, adult).
