Etymology

edit

perse +‎ -o, derived from perse (arse).[1] Compare dialectal makeaperse (sweet-toothed person, literally sweet ass), colloquial herkkuperse and e.g. olla makean perään (to be greedy for sweet, literally to be after sweet).

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /ˈperso/, [ˈpe̞rs̠o̞]
  • Rhymes: -erso
  • Hyphenation(key): per‧so

Adjective

edit

perso (comparative persompi, superlative persoin)

  1. greedy [with allative ‘for’] (consumed by selfish desires for something that brings pleasure, e.g. sweet, unhealthy food)
    Nalle Puh on perso hunajalle.
Winnie the Pooh is greedy for honey.
    Olen todella perso makealle.
    I'm a real sweet tooth.

Usage notes

edit
  • perso is seldom used without specifying a specific object for which someone is greedy ('for'), which is expressed with the allative case.
  • perso is mostly used of greed or desire for something which one considers to bring pleasure or be attractive, rather than for e.g. material wealth.
