Etymology

edit

Uncertain. Maybe from older *klêsh, from Proto-Indo-European *klek-, *kleg- (to shout). Cognate to Ancient Greek κλώσσω (klṓssō, to cluck), Old Church Slavonic клекотъ (klekotŭ, laughter, noise), Latin clangō (scream, sound), Old English hliehhan (to laugh). However it is found in Arbëreshë Albanian as kjesh. Usually Old Albanian kl- becomes q- in Albanian while it is preserved as kl- in Arbëreshë Albanian.
