From Proto-Slavic *rězati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *rḗˀźtei, from Proto-Indo-European *wreh₁ǵ-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian rězać, Czech řezat, Russian ре́зать (rézatʹ), and Old Church Slavonic рѣзати (rězati).
