From Old Norse ráð, from Proto-Norse *ᚱᚨᛞᚨᛉ (rādaz), Proto-Germanic *rēdaz. Cognate with Old Frisian rēd, Old Saxon rād (Dutch raad ‘advice’), Old High German rāt (German Rat ‘advice’), Danish råd, Swedish råd ‘advice, way out’.
