From Proto-Finnic *rauta, borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *raudą (compare Old Norse rauði (hematite)) or Proto-Balto-Slavic [Term?] (compare Latvian rūda (ore)), but in either case ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (red).
