Preposition

edit

regardless of

  1. without attention to; without regard for
Synonyms: irrespective of; see also Thesaurus:despite
He smoked cigars regardless of the consequences.

Usage notes

edit
  • regardless, without of, is sometimes used as a preposition, but usage with of is more correct.
  • This term can also be analyzed as a postpositive adjective "regardless" (placed after the modified noun) that takes a prepositional phrase headed by "of" as its complement.
    • Tatiana knew the meat had passed its expiry date, but she ate it regardless [of the food having passed its expiry date].
