editFrom Proto-Finnic *siika, of unknown further origin, but related words are found in Germanic (Swedish sik), Baltic (Latvian sīga) and Slavic (Russian сиг (sig)); the word has been variously thought to originate from any one of those three and might ultimately be from a substrate.
