Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 生育, composed of (to bear; to give birth) and (to raise; to bring up). The word properly means "to birth and raise", but the dục part, as in giáo dục (to educate) or dưỡng dục (to raise), is probably confused with  / (, lust), as in tình dục (sex).
