editFrom Vulgar Latin *snellus (“brisk, lively”) (compare Old French esnel, isnel (“sudden, quick”), Occitan isnel, irnel (“lively”)), from Frankish *snell, *snel (“sudden, quick”) from Proto-Germanic *snellaz (“active, sudden, quick”). Akin to Old High German snel, snell (“bold, agile, lively, swift, brisk”). More at snell.
