spalis

Lithuanian
editEtymology
editCognate with Latvian spaļi (“waste of flax or hemp”), Old Prussian spelanxtis (“splinter”); outside of Baltic, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pelH- (“to split, tear off”). If so, then compare Ancient Greek σπολᾰ́ς (spolás, “leather garment”), Latin spolium (“skin, hide; spoils”), Old Church Slavonic поль (polĭ, “sex; half”),[1] Proto-Germanic *spelþą (“destruction, ruin”), Sanskrit फल् (phal, “to burst; to bear fruit”).
