Noun

sugar substitute (plural sugar substitutes)

  1. A food additive that replicates the sweetness of sugar but is not sugar.

Usage notes

edit

Some terminologies assert that sugar alcohols are sugar substitutes but are not artificial sweeteners, making the term artificial sweetener hyponymous to the term sugar substitute. This classification method allows for foods made with sugar alcohols to be labeled with the phrase no artificial sweeteners. But in broader usage that is also widespread, the two terms are synonymous.
