From Proto-Balto-Slavic *suś-, *suk- (hence Proto-Slavic *sъsati “to suck”),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *sew(H)- (juice; liquid”, with the semantic shift “to suck” > “to trickle, seep” > “rain) also apprearing in Ancient Greek and Tocharian. Cognate with Latvian sùkt, Latin sūcus (juice), Polish ssać.[2]
