From Proto-Vietic *saːmʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁haam (Shorto). Cognate with Muong thảm, Bahnar tơhngam/hngam, Mon ဒ္စာံ (həcam), Bolyu saːm⁵³.
