From Proto-Polynesian *taŋi (compare with Maori tangi), from Proto-Oceanic *taŋis (compare with Fijian tagi), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taŋis (compare with Malay tangis), from Proto-Austronesian *Caŋis.[1][2]
