Etymology 1

edit

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ta-t (to put, to place). Cognate with Burmese ထား (hta:, to put), Tibetan འདེགས་པ ('degs pa, to put), Old Chinese (OC *taʔ, *tas, *da, *taɡ, *daɡ), Nuosu (da, to put) and Jingpho da (to put). Compare Zaiwa dvo and Longchuan Achang tʰɔ³¹. A parallel grammaticalisation with Chinese  / (put) has occurred (“to put” > “indicating continuous action”).

Etymology 2

edit

Possibly related with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-t(y)ak (to rise, to ascend, to climb, upper part), although another verb taʔ³¹ (to ascend, to attend (school)) matching this better exists. Cognate with Burmese (hta., to rise, to get up). Compare Lhao Vo to", Zaiwa dvoq and Longchuan Achang tʰɔʔ⁵⁵.

Usage notes
edit

Etymology 1 and 2 have become homophones due to historical sound changes in Pela (cf. Zaiwa dvo vs. dvoq). Since both of them can form compounds with the verb ja̠p⁵⁵ (sleep), the compound verb ja̠p⁵⁵ ta̠³⁵ is confusing and its correct meaning can be almost only understood with the help of contexts. However, some speakers still use, though sporadically, an alternative form, ta̠ʔ for Etymology 2.
